Acquisition of Structures at Syntax-Discourse Interface: Post-Verbal Subjects in L2 English

چکیده

The present study explores the acceptability of postverbal subjects by intermediate and advanced L2 English learners with L1 Macedonian, a pro-drop Slavic language rich verbal morphology. two languages differ regarding distribution subject-verb inversion (SVI): in it is default pattern thetic sentences, but severely restricts SVI to specific contexts. To test hypothesis that Macedonian encounter difficulties acquisition because crosslinguistic influence, grammaticality judgement correction task was administered groups control group native speakers. results revealed find VS sentences + it-insertion examples more acceptable than speakers, performance closer speakers learners. Both non-native accept readily inappropriate conform typical structures.
